In 2007, a group of like-minded people came together and realised that there was a void in the Indian educational system that needed to be filled. Places of higher learning were then dominated by technical and vocational institutes. They wanted to explore the possibilities of an education rooted in a broad-based Liberal Arts pedagogy. This group – Ashoka’s founders – envisioned a university that would nurture and mentor the next generation of nation builders.
And that is how Ashoka University was born. And is today a 100-acre campus, home to India’s finest graduate pool. In just a decade since inception, the University has established itself as an institution of teaching and research excellence.
India’s largest collective philanthropy project, Ashoka holds the distinction of putting an Indian university on the world map. Within the short span of a decade, the University has emerged as India’s premier multi and interdisciplinary higher educational institution committed to delivering academic excellence in Liberal Arts, the Sciences and research.
Collective philanthropy and shared governance The University is professionally managed with several bodies overseeing academic and administrative aspects of the institution. Irrespective of the quantum of donation, the decision-making responsibility is shared between academics, the University leadership, founders and other stakeholders – a model that is unprecedented in Indian higher education.
This democratic approach is tempered with administrative rigour as Ashoka incorporates and adheres to the highest global standards of academic governance.
